Is vertical indoor farming the future of agriculture?
VV
Vertical indoor farming is one of the topics that will be discussed during Global forum for innovations in agriculture on 5-6 February in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
According to the United Nations Population Division, the world population will increase to 9.2 billion in 2050. The percentage of urban population will likewise increase to 68.70% in 2050. At the same time planet is running short of farmland: the land area of the Earth is limited only to about 13 billion hectares. Future farms should use less land, less water, less fertilizer, but grow year-round crop. Despite it sounds like a science fiction, vertical farming is already making this a reality.
“Vertical indoor farming is becoming increasingly popular, not only in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Japan, but also in Africa and Asia, - tells Mr. David W. Martin, CEO of Indoor Farms of America.
“We already have sold 25 farms in different countries and I can tell that even with all the advantages, not all growing equipment will give the same results. For example "Stacked" horizontal hydro systems and "A" Frame Hydroponic or other Aeroponic Systems, in our opinion, do not perform financially in a competitive major market. They have lower crop densities, poor use of space, require higher labor costs”, - explains CEO Martin.
Indoor Farms of America spent nearly 2 years in Design, Prototyping, Testing, Proof of Concept on Crop Growing, Refinement and IP Patent Processing. “With innovation comes the ability and the responsibility to educate, so we created a page on our website, where everyone can compare our Vertical Aeroponic Equipment to any other growing equipment. This was made to help people decide what to invest in as a farm operator”, - shares David W. Martin.
Economic advantages of different types of indoor equipment, future perspectives and payback period could be discussed with Mr. David W. Martin and his colleagues at company’s stand during Global Forum for Innovations in agriculture in Abu Dhabi in early February at the National Exhibitions Centre.
