The garlic surfaces decrease in Andalusia

Andalusia , one of Spain producing regions garlic , recorded a decline in its cultivation.
According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Agriculture , the area under cultivation decreased by 14 % from 5550 hectares in 2013 to 4,762 hectares in 2014. In terms of production , the decline was 15% with 58,181 produced in 2013 against 49,431 tonnes in 2014.After 3 seasons of sales at a loss , many farmers preferred to abandon the cultivation of garlic .
They estimate the average production to cost 80 cents per kilo , while the selling price is only 70 cents. The situation is untenable and the future of the production of garlic is uncertain .
