Breeders, policymakers and international experts will discuss variety protection and its role in addressing agricultural challenges.
How can plant breeders be encouraged to develop new varieties while agriculture faces mounting climate pressures?
That question will be among the subjects discussed at an international seminar organized by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) on November 5, 2026.
Held in Tsukuba under the East Asia Plant Variety Protection Forum, the event will examine the importance of intellectual property protection for agricultural innovation.
The program includes speakers from the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV), the Vietnam Seed Association, the Community Plant Variety Office and Japanese breeding organizations.
Participants will explore the benefits of plant variety protection systems and discuss how breeders and policymakers can respond to global challenges, including climate change.
Established in 2007, the East Asia Plant Variety Protection Forum brings together 13 countries from ASEAN, Japan, China and South Korea.
The seminar is free to attend and will be conducted in English.
