"Su Scioffu" covers 26 hectares and the 134 greenhouses are equipped with 84,000 photovoltaic panels.
Built in Sardinia near the town of Villasor, west of Cagliari, "Scioffu Su" is the largest area in the world for solar greenhouses. It covers 26 hectares, or 36 football fields. The greenhouse panels are capable of producing 20 MW of electricity.
The electricity saving equals 25,000 tons of CO2 per year and can provide electricity to 10,000 households in Sardinia. An extension is planned which will cause the output to increase to 40 MW.
The first agricultural harvest of these greenhouses is expected in October 2012.
