Hail has hit an important area for the production of apples and could lead to lower exports.
The Nelson region that produces nearly 30% of the apples in the country has been hit by several bouts of hail.
A large part of Nelson, Waimea Plains and in particular Mahana, suffered severe hail storms last Thursday and Friday. According to Zealander Stuff, some orchards
suffered heavy losses. An inspector to assess the damage said it was the worst episode of hail since 2004.
It is still too early to accurately assess the damage, but these losses could lead to a decrease in exports. Exports from the region are between 250,000 and 300,000 tonnes.
