Nelson Mandela was also a defender of the right to food

For the FAO (the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization), Nelson Mandela was also one of the strongest defenders of the right to food as recalled José Graziano da Silva, General Director of FAO .
"A real champion of human rights, Nelson Mandela understood that hunger that afflicted millions of people was unfair and unbearable," said the General Director .
"Mandela understood that a man, a woman or a hungry child can not be truly free. He believed that in order to eliminate the hunger, the problem was not so much in producing more food, but to affirm the political will to give people access to resources and services that are necessary to buy or produce healthy food in sufficient quantities."
We are indebted to him for having raised his voice against hunger. But particularly, we are obliged to redouble the efforts to end the chronic hunger and undernourishment in our lifetime from which suffer 842 million people worldwide."
