The latest cargo of New Zealand kiwis this season 2019 has been exported to Asia, especially Hong Kong and Taiwan. This 2019 crop was the second most important harvest and the first season when the volume exported of yellow kiwis surpassed the volume of green kiwis.
According to Blair Hamill, Chief Global Supply Officer at Zespri, this season 147 million trays of kiwifruit have been exported to more than 50 countries. The volume shipped totals 17,160 containers, or more than 500,000 tonnes of kiwifruit in total. Compared with the previous season, the number of containers shipped has slightly decreased but this 2019 season was the second most important harvest in history and the first season when Zespri exported more SunGold kiwis (74 million trays) than Green kiwis (73 million trays).
New Zealand's kiwifruit season has ended, Northern Hemisphere production has begun. Zespri forecasts a total of just over 19 million kiwi trays thanks to its partner producers in Italy, France, Japan, Korea and Greece.
For next season's New Zealand harvest, the departure of the first kiwifruit-exporting vessel for the new season is scheduled for March 2020.
