Chile onion exports rise as garlic earnings fall

Chile’s fresh onion exports reached US$31 million between January and June 2026, up 30% year on year, according to the Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies, ODEPA.

Export volume increased by 7%. The average unit value for January-May stood at US$0.48 per kg, 22% higher than a year earlier.

Spain was the main destination, accounting for 47% of onion export value. Shipments to that market averaged US$0.60 per kg, compared with US$0.53 per kg during the same period in 2025.

Garlic exports moved in the opposite direction. Earnings fell 18% to US$23 million in the first half of the year. The average export value declined by 38%, from US$3.00 to US$1.90 per kg.

Mexico received 77% of Chile’s fresh garlic exports by both value and volume. Overall, fresh vegetable shipments from Chile increased 8% in volume and 1% in value during the six-month period.
