One of the avocado industry leaders is looking to expand in Europe and Asia

A few years ago Calavo Growers has opened a packinghouse in Ciudad Guzmán, Jalisco, Mexico and increased total annual fresh avocado packing capacity. This facility now allows the company to increase exports to Europe and Asia.
“Trees are young, they will grow, so quantity will increase each year,” - says Peter Shore, Director, Business Development and Marketing. “Quality looks excellent. Jalisco climate is drier, avocados are very consistent.” Avocados from Jalisco are in season from June to March.
Americans eat 7-8 lbs. (3.62 kg) of avocados per year on average, while in Europe consumption is only 2-3 lbs. (0.9-1.36 kg) now and growing each year. It is very similar to the situation in the US market years ago. World Avocado Organization forecasts an increase in consumption in Europe and expects that it will reach the US level in around 7 years. “Calavo growers will expand export to the European market as it has nice potential growth. Another target is the Asian market,” – comments Peter.
In the domestic market, Calavo works with retailers, wholesalers, and foodservice distributors. In the export market, the company is open to work with importers and retailers.
Calavo Growers, Inc. also markets tomatoes, Hawaiian papayas, guacamole, guacamole hummus, and salsa under the respected Calavo brand name. The company was founded in 1924. For more information check http://www.calavo.com/
