Mexico investigates US Cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce

Authorities are reviewing the supply chain while stressing that the product’s origin does not establish where contamination occurred.
Mexican health and agriculture authorities have launched a joint investigation into a US outbreak of Cyclospora cayetanensis associated with shredded iceberg lettuce, according to Mexico’s Ministry of Health and Ministry of Agriculture.
US authorities reported 1,644 cases and 94 hospitalizations, with no deaths. Symptoms were recorded between May 13 and July 13, 2026. The lettuce involved was served at locations of a restaurant chain in several US states.
Mexico’s Cofepris and Senasica are carrying out inspections and traceability checks while exchanging technical information with the US Food and Drug Administration. The Mexican authorities said these measures are preventive.
According to the release, traceability work points to a single lettuce supplier. However, authorities stressed that identifying the product’s country of origin does not prove that contamination occurred in Mexico, and the investigation into the source remains open.
Senasica is also working with production units to strengthen contamination-risk reduction systems and good agricultural practices.
