After agreeing standars with the U.S., the EU began negotiations with China to mutually recognise organic labels.
Dacian Ciolos, European Commissioner for Agriculture, recently met with the Chinese Minister of Agriculture and agreed to start negotiations to reach a Mutual Recognition of organic labels. Discussions will focus on the respective legislation, technical standards and procedures.
In Europe, turnover
in the organic market is estimated at 18 billion euros. The EU has seen its exports to China increase significantly in recent years. China's exports of organic products to Europe are not known but may have decreased following the economic crisis since 2008 and food scandals in China (tainted milk, apples pesticides, cadmium in rice ...).
