Argentine exports of lemons to the United States had ceased in 2001 but will resume next year.
Lemons from Argentina will be able to return to the US market as early as next year.
(USDA), the Ministry of Agriculture and APHIS, the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Inspection Service, issued a final rule authorizing the import of fresh lemons into the United States from northwestern Argentina. All shipments will require a phytosanitary certificate accompanied by an additional declaration that the lemons have been inspected, that they are free from pests and that they have been produced in accordance with the requirements.
For years APHIS has examined the production and packaging practices of citrus fruit in Argentina, visiting the sites in 2007, 2015 and September 2016. Today the publication of the final rule determines that the lemons produced in the northwest of Argentina can be imported safely into the United States. APHIS and SENASA, the Argentine national plant protection organization, will finalize the work plan that will detail the requirements for each lemons expedition to the United States.
Argentina is the world's No. 1 producer of lemons with 1.5 million tonnes of which 80% comes from the Tucumán region and exports about 200,000 tonnes.
