A new local production, available 12 months out of 12.
Appreciated in Europe where France, Belgium and the Netherlands are among the leading countries in production, endive or witlof is an unknown vegetable in South Africa but production has started.
A farmer in the Western Cape region started growing endives. To diversify its production (apples, pears, potatoes, onions) its choice was endive, with the methods of hydroponic agriculture.
The farmer can largely supply the local market, with 2-3 tons per week, all year round. It remains to familiarize consumers with this new vegetable. But the producer is confident, endive is an exceptional product with many health benefits.
