Turkey, which has seen its walnut production increase by 53% in 10 years reaches third in the world rankings of largest producers.
After China and the United States, Turkey is ranked the third largest producer of walnuts.
2010 data from the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) indicate 2.5 million tons produced on 844,000 hectares throughout the world. The classification of the producing countries: China, with 1 million tons, the United States with 457,000 tons, and
Turkey in third with 178,000 tons.
In recent years, Turkish production is progressing rapidly, recording 53% growth over the last 10 years. The increase in production follows more land area and the number of trees. In 2002 the number of trees was estimated at 5.5 million in 2011 that rose to 9.6 million.
