From May to early June, the young plants are transplanted manually, that is to say planted one by one in the production plots (Photo: oignon-doux-des-cevennes.fr).
Unlike other agricultural sectors in France, the sweet onion producers in the Cévennes were able to carry out their operations for the next harvest.
The health crisis had no negative impact on the production of sweet onions from the Cévennes. Planting has developed and transplanting operations have started. Despite the confinement, the producers managed to gather the usual seasonal workers and volunteers, most of whom were partially unemployed but ready to work in another sector for a fortnight.
Transplanting of sweet Cévennes onions started at the beginning of the month and should be finished in a few days.
The marketing period is scheduled for early August. However, fears remain regarding the uncertainty of the recovery in the catering sector and the attitude of consumers after the health crisis.
