In fact, according to the Russian Minister of Energy, Chairman of the Turkish-Russian Intergovernmental Commission, the necessary changes should be made in the legal texts to allow only 4 Turkish companies to export 50 000 tonnes of tomatoes from December 1st.
A Russian commission had recently visited Turkey to see if the phytosanitary conditions for the export of Turkish tomatoes to Russia were met.
This would be the last step towards the liberalization of Russian imports of fruit and vegetables of Turkish origin, which had been "frozen" since the 1st of January 2016, after the fall of a Russian aircraft by the Turkish armed forces. Since April 2017, some Turkish fruits and vegetables have been gradually allowed but tomato remains a sensitive topic, with Russian tomato production on the rise demanding protection.
