The season started early and the German production, the highest in Europe, will increase rapidly in the coming weeks.
The 2012 season for asparagus began early this year in Germany.
The sunny days of last month helped start the asparagus season and since week 13, several regions in Germany have started harvesting. Prices are still high (10 to 15 € / kg) but large quantities are planned for weeks 14 and 15, which should bring prices down.
Germany leads European production with
103,000 tons of asparagus harvested last year and leads consumption with 1.94 kg of fresh asparagus purchased per household.
Only two markets in Europe have increased demand for asparagus: Germany (where consumers prefer white asparagus) and the UK (where consumers prefer green asparagus).
