In order to facilitate the trade of fresh products between the United States and Mexico, the health entities of both parties certify irradiation plants for the elimination of bacteria and pests from fruit and vegetable products, inform Mexico's media.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the responsible one for regulating the energy destined to irradiate the products that enter the U.S.
Irradiation is a conventional variant of phytosanitary treatment, its main objective being to neutralize pests and reduce risks to plant health in importing countries.
The advantages of treatment:
. The fruit can be more mature at the time of export and since it is not subjected to high temperatures, it does not lose its quality and flavor;
. The fruit is chemical free;
. It is an environmentally friendly treatment.
. It is a fast method, since the products take 2 hours from the time they enter the plant until they leave for distribution.
