n Australia, the table grape sector has made remarkable progress over the past 10 years, increasing production by more than a third and exports by 50%.
According to a recent report issued by the USDA's FAS, Australia ranks 13th among world producers of table grapes and 5th among producers in the Southern Hemisphere (based on 2021/221 estimates), with an average of nearly 200,000 tonnes over the last 5 years.
Australian table grape exports have averaged nearly 130,000 tonnes over the past 5 years, close to Egyptian and European Union levels. This growth in exports was largely driven by China, which has become its number one market. During the 2018/19 campaign, exports reached a record 153,000 tonnes, i.e. a volume that more than doubled compared to 2012/13.
In Australia table grapes are grown in 6 of the 8 states and territories, the harvest cycle begins in October in the Northern Territory and ends in May, with the bulk of domestic production in the states of Victoria and New South Wales.
The latest forecasts indicate for 2022/23 production reaching 210,000 tons and exports reaching 135,000 tons.
