13.8 million tons of fruit and vegetable supply in France
The CTIFL has released a new study to provide a better understanding of how the French market is supplied, with nearly 8.5 million tons consumed fresh and 3 million tons processed.
The French market for fresh fruits and vegetables is supplied almost as much by imports—5.3 million tons—as by domestic production, of which 5.7 million tons are consumed fresh. Domestic production totals 8.5 million tons, of which 3 million tons are processed. Nearly 2.1 million tons of fruits and vegetables are exported, mostly as re-exports, while product losses are estimated at 250,000 tons.
10 billion euros through purchasing groups
5.3 million tons of fruits and vegetables are imported into France to supplement domestic supply. Approximately 54% come from the European Union, and 46% from third countries. France serves as a logistics hub for nearly one million tons, primarily products from Spain and Morocco destined for Northern Europe. Wholesale distribution remains strong and generated €6.4 billion in revenue in 2023, up 13% since 2020. Retail buying groups account for nearly €10 billion in sales. Specialized channels such as organic and fresh produce stores account for nearly 15% of retail sales. Source: CTIFL Retail #423.
