Rare Indonesian durian variety fetches $1,000 at mall display

A luxury fruit is turning heads in Indonesia: a rare durian variety called “J-Queen” has been sold for around $1,000, more than three times the country’s average monthly salary.
The fruit appeared in a shopping mall in Tasikmalaya, West Java, displayed in red satin boxes with decorative flowers and a price tag of 14 million rupiah, according to local media.
Its creator says he developed the J-Queen by crossbreeding two top durian varieties from different regions. The tree reportedly bears fruit only once every three years, producing round, golden-yellow durians with a taste described as “peanut and butter.”
Unlike typical durians with a longer shape, the J-Queen stands out for both its appearance and exclusivity. As with all durians, opinions on its aroma remain divided — some find it sweet and pleasant, while others compare it to rotting onions or sewage.
