Kenya wants to improve its production and introduces five new varieties of mangoes more productive than local varieties.
New varieties yield 10 times greater and best post-harvest methods.
KARI (Kenya Agricultural Research Institute) has introduced five new varieties of mangoes from Florida (USA). These varieties (Haden, Tommy Atkins, Van Dyke, Sensation, Kent) have a yield potential of 1000 to 1 200 fruits per tree, whereas conventional varieties (Ngoe, Boribo, Apple) produce only 200.
The coastal area of the country has been chosen to deploy these new varieties that will be grown with local dwarf varieties (Peach, Sabre). The objective of this project is to fight against poverty, to improve yields for increasing revenues. And also to change the post-harvest practices, the process of transformation (juice, jam, chutney) to improve valorisation and keep the surplus in the country.
