In Japan, the cherry blossom season, or sakura, is between March and April. Each year the weather services and all the media follow the "cherry blossom front" which moves from the south to the north of Japan
According to the 8th forecast published by JMC (Japan Meteorological Corporation), here are the official dates to observe the 1st flowers (kaika) and the full bloom (mankai) according to the regions of the country:
.Tokyo March 22 (kaika), March 30 (mankai)
.Nagoya March 22, April 1
.Hiroshima March 23, April 1
.Osaka March 26, April 2
.Kyoto March 26, April 2
.Wakayama March 26, April 3
.Kanazawa April 3, April 9
.Nagano April 11, April 16
.Sapporo April 28, May 4.
JMC has developed its own forecasting method. JMC estimates bloom and full bloom dates for each zone based on low temperatures reached in fall and winter, cherry tree growth status, cumulative temperatures, and past data for each zone. These bloom date forecasts are based on data from approximately 1,000 observation sites nationwide. A further update of these dates is scheduled for March 24.
A real party to celebrate the arrival of spring, hanami ("flower viewing") is an opportunity for the Japanese to come together to picnic, discuss, sing, eat and drink under the cherry blossoms.
In tradition, cherry blossoms symbolize the fragility and brevity of human life.
