Colombia explores PepsiCo partnership for potatoes, plantains and maize

Tolima could become one focus of a plan linking food manufacturers more closely with domestic growers.
Colombia’s Agriculture Ministry and PepsiCo are exploring a partnership aimed at increasing the productivity and quality of potatoes, plantains and yellow maize supplied by Colombian farmers.
The discussions centre on building a closer link between agricultural production and demand from the food-processing industry.
Tolima opportunity
Tolima is one of the main areas being considered for the partnership. More than 60,000 hectares in the department are served by irrigation districts.
The government sees room to expand yellow maize production and help meet industry demand of around 17,000–23,000 tonnes.
Potatoes and plantains are also part of the proposed cooperation, as PepsiCo already buys these crops from Colombian growers.
Farm investment
The government said it could support participating growers through financing, incentives for irrigation and mechanisation, and easier access to improved seed.
The objective is to raise yields and quality while giving farmers a clearer commercial outlet for their crops.
PepsiCo has indicated its support for continuing discussions on the partnership.
