Ecuador’s banana cluster issues communiqué warning of Fusarium R4T.

The Banana and Plantain Cluster of Ecuador, including the Association of Banana Exporters (AEBE), has issued a joint statement urging producers and stakeholders to stay alert to the threat of Fusarium oxysporum tropical race 4 (R4T), a soil-borne fungus that can devastate banana crops.

In the communiqué, the cluster emphasised the need for strict phytosanitary practices, early detection and coordinated prevention measures to limit the spread of the disease. Members called on farmers, packers and exporters to follow established biosecurity protocols and report any suspicious symptoms promptly.

The group also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen monitoring systems and technical support so that the sector can respond quickly if R4T is detected in new areas. While no widespread outbreaks have been confirmed in Ecuador, the cluster said preparedness remains essential to protect the industry’s production and export markets.
