1.6 kg of asparagus per year per capita

The consumption of asparagus in Germany is 1.6 kg per inhabitant per year.

Germany has consumed 127,000 tons of asparagus in 2012: about 102,300 tons from domestic production and 24,000 tons from imports. The country is the 3rd largest producer of asparagus after China and Peru.

Asparagus is very weather dependent. This year the persistent cold has delayed a few weeks the start of the season. Rising temperatures will give the true signal of the start of the 2013 season.
