The German government allows the entry of seasonal workers from Eastern Europe into the agricultural sector.
To combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Germany, like other European countries, had put in place strict border control measures. But these measures prevented seasonal workers from joining German farms.
Faced with the risk of significant losses for the next harvests, 80,000 seasonal workers (40,000 per month) will be allowed to enter Germany from Eastern Europe over the next 2 months. This was agreed on Thursday by the Minister of Agriculture Julia Klöckner (CDU) and the Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU).
These workers can only enter Germany by group and by plane. A health check is planned. If there are indications of a corona infection, entry will be refused. These people must work separately from other workers for the first 14 days and cannot leave the farm.
The German agricultural sector usually employs 300,000 seasonal workers.
