US pineapple imports ease after near-record year

Costa Rican shipments weakened through May after difficult growing conditions.
US fresh pineapple imports reached 2.88 billion pounds in 2025, the second-highest volume on record, according to the USDA Economic Research Service.
The total was around 1% below the record of 2.92 billion pounds set in 2024. Estimated availability reached 8.4 pounds per person.
The United States has been the world’s largest importer of fresh pineapples every year since 1997.
Costa Rican shipments decline
Costa Rica supplied 86% of US pineapple imports last year. Its planted area increased from around 12,500 acres in 2000 to more than 50,000 acres in 2024.
However, US pineapple imports fell 2% during the first five months of 2026. Shipments from Costa Rica were down 7% after heavy rain and other difficult weather affected plantings in 2025.
