The risk of cardiovascular disease is reduced by 40% through the consumption of seeds and nuts.
The benefits of seed and nut consumption on heart health have just been confirmed by a large-scale study (80,000 participants, more than 9 years of follow-up).
The study conducted by scientists from the University of Loma Linda (California), AgroParisTech and INRA (National Institute of Agricultural Research) examined the data concerning more than 80 000 participants over an average duration of 9,4 years.
The study looked at diets based on 5 models of different protein sources: meat, nuts and seeds, cereals, processed foods, fruits and vegetables. Then assessed the effects of these different diets on cardiovascular disease.
The results showed that people consuming seeds and nuts had a 40% reduction in their risk of cardiovascular disease. While people consuming a lot of meat protein had instead an increased risk of 60%. For the consumption of cereals, processed foods or fruits and vegetables, the researchers did not found any beneficial or negative correlation.
