Brazil took measures to slow down the lands acquisition by foreigners.
A new law, decided by the government approved limits on land acquisition in Brazil by foreigners to a maximum of 5,000 hectares.
Foreign individuals or companies cannot own lands exceeding 25 % of the area of a municipality.
The central Bank of Brazil calculated that between 2003 and 2007, foreign investments in farmlands increased by 347 %.
The Brazilian government considered that these foreign acquisitions threatened the national security and generated excessive appreciation of land prices.
