In recent months, mango shipments from Mexico to the United States and other countries have faced serious obstacles. Factors such as restrictive measures imposed by the USDA and water shortages due to drought have caused a sharp drop in exports. Jose Angel Crespo, who presides EMEX, commented that more than 3.52 million boxes of mangoes failed to sell, as a result of a drop in production and operating restrictions during weekends.
Despite these challenges, Mexico is expected to export more than 62 million boxes of mangos this year, although the figure will be lower compared to the nearly 66 million exported in 2023. Aside from the United States, other countries such as Japan, Canada, Spain, and France remain important buyers. USDA regulations, particularly in the heat treatment plants in the south of the country, have reduced export capacity by 10% to 15%.
In addition, competing countries such as Guatemala, Peru and Costa Rica have gained ground in the U.S. market. Experts also warn that climate change and lack of water could further reduce Mexican production in the coming years.
