In 2022, fresh potato exports from the United States to Mexico exceeded $88 million, making it the second-largest export market, according to data from the Department of Commerce.
Since 2003, the United States has sought access for potatoes throughout Mexico beyond a 26-kilometer zone along the border between the two countries, outside of which imports were not permitted. In April 2021, the Mexican Supreme Court confirmed the authority of Mexico's regulatory agency to expand access for said product, and that year the country completed the necessary regulatory steps for access to cities with populations of over 100,000.
Finally, in May 2022, the United States began to send fresh potatoes to Mexico beyond the 26-kilometer zone. Since then, the country has been monitoring the situation to ensure transparent and predictable access for U.S. exporters.
The National Potato Council (NPC), which represents the interests of all commercial potato producers in the United States, helps its producers address access issues for fresh and processed potato products in export markets around the world. In this effort, the Council coordinates its trade policy objectives with the American Potato Trade Alliance (APTA).
