The fruit growing team of the Ministry of Economic and Productive Development of Río Negro (Argentina) visited the cherry producing companies in Chimpay, in order to support them in the face of the setbacks caused by last Saturday's storm.
Rio Negro producers are always subject to weather variations, and although harvests were already over 80 percent, only four days of harvesting were lost with exportable volumes and high quality fruit for the local market, according to Facundo Fernández, Secretary of Fruit Growing.
The impact of climate change is evident every year, and although companies have frost defense tools and mechanized irrigation systems to face intense storms, the fruit can absorb water through the skin instead of through the root, causing the peel to break and the fruit to be lost.
Today, the quality of the fruit remains satisfactory, the harvests developed according to previous estimates. Being an emblematic product for Río Negro, the cherry could grow in a qualitative segment of great demand at local and international level.
