The European Union and China have just signed a bilateral agreement to protect 100 European IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) in China and 100 Chinese IGP in the EU.
Signed in November 2019, the bilateral agreement to protect 100 European PGIs in China and 100 Chinese PGIs in the EU was signed on September 14.
"Products bearing European geographical indications are renowned for their quality and diversity. It is important to protect them at Union and global level in order to guarantee their authenticity and preserve their reputation. This agreement will help to achieve this objective while strengthening our trade relationship, in the interest of the agro-food sector and of Chinese and European consumers "commented Janusz Wojciechowski, Member of the Commission responsible for agriculture and rural development.
The list of European PGIs that will be protected in China includes wines, beers, spirits, cheeses, cold cuts, but also Kalamatas olives (Greece), Agen prunes (France), Rocha pear do Oeste (Portugal).
The list of Chinese PGIs that will be protected in the EU includes wines, teas, rice but also Gannan orange, Yantai apple, Fangxian mushroom, Nanfeng orange, Anyue lemon, Xinghua's chives, Jingning's apple, Anqiu's ginger, Jingning's apple, Cangxi's kiwi, Jinzhou's pear, Changshou's pomelo.
After its ratification by the European Parliament, this agreement will have to be adopted by the Council for entry into force expected by the end of 2021.
