This decrease in the area of potatoes may cause a decline in U.S. production in 2013.
Decrease in the area of potatoes compared to last year.

According to a recent report by the Ministry of Agriculture, the area of potatoes totaled 1.06 million acres this year. The decrease is  net compared to 1.13 million acres identified last year.

Professionals estimate that this decline is the direct result of an inactive 2012-13 market, at less attractive prices for producers.

The reduction in area was observed in 7 of the 9 most productive states: Idaho passed from 344 000 to 316, 000 acres, Washington State from 164 000 to 160, 000 acres, North Dakota from 84 000 to 80,000 acres, Wisconsin from 64 000 to 63 000 acres, Colorado from 54 600 to 54 300 acres, Maine from 57 000 to 54 000 acres, Oregon from 41 900 to 39 900 acres. In Minnesota, the surfaces remain unchanged in the total of 47,000 acres last year, only the state of Michigan sees its surfaces increase by 45 500 to 46, 000 acres.
