Olive oil is the second most exported agro-food product from Italy to the United States. At the end of last year, overseas sales have reached 575.7 million dollars (+17% compared to 2006) followed by those of Spain and Tunisia.
However the olive oil production is growing also in the United States. California is practically the only state of the United States where the olive tree is cultivated, excepting some small areas in Arizona and Texas.
Californian olive groves are almost all located in the valleys of Sacramento (Wine Country) and San Joaquin (Central Valley), where there are suitable climatic conditions for their cultivation. The most popular varieties between local are the Manzanillo and the Sevillano, and between the Italian origin varieties there are the Frantoio, the Leccino, the Pendolio, the Maurino, the Moraiolo and the Taggiasca.
The figures provided by the California Olive Oil Council estimate a production of 750,000 gallons (28.390,58 hectolitres) in 2008.
Production in California covers an area of over 10,000 acres (4.046,85 hectares) of land. And it is expected an increase to 15,000 acres (6.070,28 hectares) by mid-2009, with about 600 olive trees per acre.
