Asparagus production still increasing
MD
Good weather and increased planted areas will result in an increased production of asparagus in Peru, one of the few countries where the asparagus are harvested throughout the year.
Production should reach 360,000 tons, up 20,000 tonnes from last year. The surfaces are estimated at 32,000 acres and average yields to 11 ton per hectare. The region of Ica in the south produces 44% of the total production of asparagus, while the Libertad region in the north, produces 48%.
After the financial crisis that led to low prices in international markets, demand is now left. Peru produced for two different markets: green asparagus to the United States and white asparagus white for Europe. The United States imports 45% of the total.
