The price of some vegetables has risen by more than a third because of last summer's heatwave, it emerged yesterday.
The dry summer and wet August of 2006 hit the harvests of crops such as potatoes, onions and apples, which have been held in storage through the winter.
The dry April this year has also been a blow to Spring crops such as lettuces, tomatoes and cucumbers, according to official figures.
The increases will particularly affect the elderly, who are the biggest consumers of fresh produce.
The price of onions, which were harvested between August and September last year, is up 38 per cent to 1,10 EUR a kilo.
Apples have seen a rise of 0,19 EUR a kilo - 11% - to an average of 1.91 EUR per kg.
'Old' potatoes, those harvested last year and then stored, were selling at 0,86 EUR a kilo in April. That is a rise of 0,12 EUR a kilo - or 17% - on the same month last year.
This year's new potato crop was sold at 1,31 EUR a kilo, which was up by 17% on the price at the same time last year.
