Citrus exports continue to rise

South African exports of citrus fruits are increasing compared to last year. The Citrus Growers Association announced that 10.1 million boxes (15 kg) were exported in week 19, a sharp increase from 8.9 million in the same period in 2010.
The biggest increase is grapefruit with 4.2 million boxes already exported, up from 2.8 million boxes in 2010. The growers' association said that 84% of grapefruit are Star Ruby variety.
The main destinations for South African citrus fruit are: Russia (35% receives 26% of oranges, lemons, sweet citrus 19%, 16% of grapefruit) Japan (20% grapefruit) Middle East (30% of volumes) , Northern Europe (46% of grapefruit, 20% of sweet citrus, 19% of oranges and lemons 8%).
