+13.4% sales of fresh-cut fruit & veg in Spain

Sales of packaged convenience fruits and vegetables in Spain reached 55,650 tons until November 2007, rising by 13.4% compared to the same period last year. This industry in Spain therefore confirms its positive trend, according to the latest data released by AFHORLA, the Spanish Association of fresh-cut ready to eat fruit and vegetables created in 2004.
Vegetables are the most developed within this industry, accounting for 55,156 tons of the total volume marketed through AFHORLA; fruits were 494,561 kilos.
The large-scale distribution received 78% of the total sales, while 22% went to restaurants & catering.
The advantages offered by ready-to-eat fruit and vegetables - among which product quality, time saving and healthiness - caused this industry to grow consistently in recent years.
The fresh-cut industry generates in Spain a turnover around 200 million euros, 95% of which correspond to AFHORLA’s members. Among these there are the most important Spanish companies of the fresh sector: we can mention Vega Mayor S.A (Navarra), Verdifresh S.L. (Valencia), Sogesol (Murcia), Kernel Export (Murcia), Primaflor (Almería), Tallo Verde S.L. (Toledo) y Bonnysa (Alicante).
