In the United Kingdom, the cherry season is promising, with, according to professionals in the sector, a volume slightly lower than that of last year which had recorded an exceptional harvest.
According to Love Fresh Cherries, which represents British fruit, harvest estimates are around 5,000 tonnes of cherries produced in the country and expected to hit supermarket shelves this year.
This forecast is slightly lower than last year's bumper harvest of 6,000 tonnes.
Cherries are produced across the country, including Kent, Staffordshire, Hampshire, Lincolnshire and Essex. Love Fresh Cherries says consumers will start seeing UK cherries in stores from mid-June, before reaching the main harvest peak from early July through August. End of season fruit will come from Hereford and Scotland.
“The demand for fresh cherries continues to grow, with around 20 million kg of cherries tasted nationwide last year,” said Matt Hancock, spokesperson for Love Fresh Cherries.
