The European ban on import of Indian mangoes makes happy : consumers.
Indian consumers are delighted that local markets are flooded with mangoes, which lowers prices. Especially for Alphonso mango variety, considered in the country as the best variety, and was mostly out of reach of middle-class households.
The prices of Alphonso mango, also known as the "king of fruits", fell, reaching their lowest level in 20 years. The fruit is now for sale at 150 to 400 rupees a kilo (between 2.50 and 4 US$), which is half of the usual price.
The European ban came into force on 1 May, and is expected to last 18 months. The EU has closed its borders to Indian mangoes after the discovery of parasites in some batches. Parasites are considered a threat to crops in Europe especially for tomatoes, cucumbers.
