Mexico’s avocado prices led inflation in May 2022, growing at the fastest pace in over a year, due to higher fertilizer prices and supply chain disruptions.
The price of avocados rose 19% last month compared to April and was responsible for 0.07% of headline month-on-month inflation, above any other items including fuels, according to Mexico's national statistics institute.
In the last 25 years, Mexican avocado production tripled, rising from 79.000 tons to 2.4 million in 2021, and today, 87% of the cultivated area of this fruit in the country's territory is officially recognized as a free zone of the avocado pests.
