Port of Genoa: seizure of kiwi from New Zealand
Italy
Sunday 02 December 2007
Agecontrol, the agency that controls Italian agricultural products, has prevented the placing on the Italian market of 993 tons (equal to a volume of about 3,000 cubic meters) of kiwi from New Zealand, due to a contamination by hydrocarbon vapors, potentially harmful to health.
As part of control at the Fruit Terminal of the Port of Genoa, the inspectors have found that goods could have been contaminated as a result of a failure of the vessel used for transportation. Analysis carried out by concerned public structures have confirmed the presence of contaminants on fruit and packaging. Agecontrol has refused the entire consignment declaring it is not compliant to the market and therefore ordered its destruction.
