In Russia, potato prices rose by 25.6% over the period from 1 to 27 May, according to Rosstat data. The price hike is attributed to the shortage caused by lower volumes received from Egypt.
Local media are reporting a surge in potato prices on the Russian market. Russia usually receives between 300,000 and 500,000 tonnes in the May-June period,’ said Alexeï Krasilnikov of the Potato Union, ’but this year Egypt has reduced its shipments, causing a shortage and a spike in prices.
This shortage should be resolved in the next few weeks with the arrival on the market of new potatoes from the southern regions of the country.
