Indian production accounts for 25.58% of world banana production.
The Minister of Agriculture said the government aims to double banana production by 2025. The announcement was made at the National Banana Festival, the major industry event in India.
For several years India has expanded its banana plantations. Banana is now grown on over 1 million hectares and production is about 29.7 million tonnes. The goal is now to reach 60 million tonnes by 2025.
To achieve this goal, banana selection, biotechnological approaches, constraints related to increased input costs, irrigation and pest management will need to be prioritized to maximize production.
