Despite the impacts of drought, fires and the COVID-19 pandemic, Australian avocado production grew 2% in volume from the previous year.
The compilation of data for 2019/20, compiled by Avocados Australia, shows that volumes reached 87,546 tonnes, an increase of 2% from the 85,546 tonnes produced the previous year. The gross value of production is estimated at AUD 493 million ($350.1 million).
In Australia, avocados are produced most of the year due to the diversity of climates and conditions in the 8 major avocado growing regions. The Queensland region continues to produce the majority of Australian avocados, accounting for 49% of production. The Western Australia region produced the 2nd largest share of national production with 38%.
Most of the production is intended for the domestic market. Australians love avocado and consume an average of 3.88 kg per person / year.
Regarding exports, the volume remains low. For 2019/20 Australia exported 4,051 tonnes of avocados, the highest volume to date, 4.63% of the volume produced. Malaysia and Singapore are currently the main export markets for Australian avocado.
Australian production is expected to increase further over the next few years, Avocados Australia estimates that production will reach 115,000 tonnes in 2024/25.
