New systems help operators manage quality and timing more precisely.
Dutch ripening technology specialist Interko is moving further into digitalisation by expanding data processing capabilities and preparing to introduce artificial intelligence into its ripening room systems. The development aims to give fruit ripening operators more precise control over product quality, energy use, and operational planning.
The company says modern ripening is increasingly managed through data rather than relying only on experience. By collecting detailed information from sensors and analysing it in real time, operators can better adjust conditions and maintain consistent ripeness levels across different fruit batches.
Smarter systems improve consistency and efficiency
A key part of the upgrade is the company’s RipePilot control platform, which now processes larger volumes of data from ripening rooms. The system monitors factors such as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, and ethylene levels, allowing operators to fine-tune conditions for different fruit types.
The technology also supports tailored programmes for products like bananas, avocados, and mangoes. This helps facilities deliver the specific ripeness levels required by retailers and processors, even when incoming fruit varies in quality or maturity.
According to the company, the improved data analysis is helping businesses reduce waste, stabilise quality, and manage energy consumption more efficiently. The ability to generate performance reports is also becoming an important tool for tracking results and meeting customer requirements.
Artificial intelligence expected to support future operations
Looking ahead, Interko expects artificial intelligence to play a growing role in fruit ripening management. By analysing data from multiple rooms and facilities, AI systems could help predict changes in fruit condition, optimise ethylene application timing, and adjust ripening cycles automatically.
The company is currently developing algorithms designed to support faster and more proactive decision-making. These tools are intended to move operations from reactive adjustments toward predictive management, improving reliability and reducing operational costs.
Future product development will focus on digital innovation, including a new generation of ripening room cooling equipment that will support further automation and AI-based process control.
