Strawberries: high quality production but disappointing prices
FJ
Bitter fact for producers of northern Italy at the beginning of the season of strawberry.
Crops are abundant, the quality is very satisfactory but the prices are disappointing. Demand seems to have stagnated.
Production of the south of the country (Basilicata, Sicilia) began in February, strawberries from Spain followed in April and early May. Thus at a normal period of strawberries, Italian consumers seem to sulk strawberries.
In addition this year, the Spanish production showed low prices, often below the cost of production. This has decreased prices for Italian producers who hoped for better prices after the end of the Spanish campaigns.
