Italy

Italian farmers are aiming to certified origin products but are afraid about genetically modified organisms competition. This is the reason why these days, news about the arrival to marketplace of rose and lemon crossbred tomatoes is causing alarm. These tomatoes result from a genetic modification in vitro that changes their natural and organoleptic properties, mainly antioxidant property which is basic. The CIA (one of the three National organisations of italian farmers) refers to an article published by the British magazine "Nature Biotechnology" in which a group of Israelian researchers tells about the tweak of genetically modified tomatoes where the antioxidant factor is slightly lowered. Therefore the CIA asks for a "higher attention regarding biotech products as a firm and unmovable opinion is required towards them. It is necessary to pay attention about food safety and safeguard principles, to consumer as well as producers care, to safeguard and valorisation of agriculture both diversified and traditional, especially the one linked to traditions of the different country areas and at last to quality and defense of typical seeds and cultures".
